“My main focus for this illustration was for it to tell a story through the simplicity of its line art and to convey the complex emotions described by Dogen through the geisha’s body language and expression. Every element inside the piece’s composition has its own role to play whether it be to support, relay or emphasise what the character is feeling, upholding ambivalence with a play between soft vulnerability and stubborn strength. The lines in themselves bring movement and direction, interacting with the geisha as they unravel and deconstruct, adding to the narrative aspect I hoped to bring to this piece. I believe that the way the geisha moves and comes to life will vary from one person to the next and I’m cautiously curious to know what she has to say.”
